Bespoke Outdoor Willow Sculptures & Structures

Handcrafted willow sculpture and structures for gardens, landscapes, public spaces, events and visitor attractions

Hanmade Willow Studio creates bespoke outdoor willow sculptures and structures designed around the individual site, scale and purpose of each commission.

From sculptural garden features and willow arches to large-scale animal sculptures, dens, domes and immersive outdoor installations, each piece is individually designed and handwoven.

Based in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, I undertake commissions across Wales and the UK.

What Can Be Created in Willow?

Outdoor Willow Sculpture

Bespoke animal, wildlife, abstract and sculptural forms designed for gardens, landscapes, parks, visitor attractions and public spaces.

Willow Arches & Moon Gates

Natural gateways and sculptural entrances designed to frame paths, views and garden spaces.

Willow Domes & Shelters

Handwoven structures that create enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces for gardens, events, play areas and visitor attractions.

Willow Dens & Tunnels

Immersive natural structures designed for exploration, imaginative play and interaction with outdoor environments.

Willow Screens & Fencing

Handwoven boundaries and screens that provide structure, division or privacy while retaining a natural appearance.

Large-Scale Willow Installations

Site-specific sculptures and structures designed for larger gardens, landscapes, public spaces, events and visitor attractions.

Designed for the Outdoor Environment

An outdoor willow commission needs to work practically as well as visually.

During the design process I consider:

  • The scale of the surrounding landscape

  • Location and exposure

  • Ground conditions

  • Wind

  • Access to the site

  • Fixing and stability

  • Intended use

  • Material selection

  • Construction method

  • Delivery and installation

  • Maintenance and longevity

For larger or more exposed structures, a suitable structural framework can be incorporated where additional strength and stability is required.

Living or Dried Willow?

The choice of willow can significantly change the appearance and maintenance requirements of an outdoor structure.

Living Willow

Living willow is planted into the ground and continues to grow after installation. It produces new shoots and foliage each year and can be woven and pruned as it develops.

It is particularly suited to suitable outdoor locations for living arches, domes, tunnels and natural play structures.

Dried Willow

Dried willow does not continue growing and provides a more consistent sculptural form throughout the year.

It can be used for outdoor sculpture, arches, screens, structures and other handwoven installations.

I can advise on which approach is most suitable for your site and project.

On-Site Weaving & Installation

For larger structures, weaving can sometimes be carried out on site rather than transporting the finished structure.

This can be particularly useful where the scale or design makes transportation difficult.

On-site construction also allows the finished form to be developed directly within its environment.

Delivery and installation requirements are discussed as part of the quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a willow sculpture to my own design?

Yes. I can work from sketches, drawings, photographs, dimensions or an initial idea and develop the final design collaboratively with you.

Can you make large willow structures?

Yes. I create larger arches, dens, domes, tunnels and sculptural installations. The construction method depends on the size, location and intended use.

Do large willow structures need a metal frame?

Not always. Smaller structures can often be constructed using willow sticks and traditional weaving techniques. Larger or more exposed structures may benefit from a suitable structural framework.

Can you install outdoor willow structures?

Yes. Delivery and installation can be included where required. Larger structures can also be woven on site.

How long does outdoor willow last?

The lifespan of dried willow depends on the material, construction, location, exposure and maintenance. Living willow can continue growing for many years when established in suitable conditions and properly maintained.

How much does a willow sculpture cost?

Every commission is different. The cost depends on the size, design, materials, construction method, location and installation requirements. I provide individual quotations based on the project.
