About Hanmade Willow Studio - Willow, Sculpture & Design
Hanmade Willow Studio is an independent willow art and design studio based in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.
Founded by artist and maker Hannah Mathias, the studio creates bespoke willow sculptures, outdoor structures, installations and handcrafted willow art for private clients, gardens, landscapes, public spaces, visitor attractions, events and commercial projects.
Every commission is individually designed and handwoven, combining traditional willow-working techniques with a contemporary approach to sculpture and design.
Hannah created the most beautiful sculpture for the winter light trail in Cardiff, Christmas at Bute Park. As an artist she is brilliant to work with from conception through to delivery. I couldn’t recommend her more highly.

Bespoke Commissions
Willow has a long history as a practical and decorative material, but its natural flexibility and strength also make it an incredibly versatile material for contemporary sculpture and design.
My work takes traditional weaving techniques and applies them to individual, site-specific pieces. I enjoy exploring the natural form, texture and movement of willow to create work that feels connected to its surroundings.
Depending on the project, I work with fine weaving willow, thicker willow rods and sticks, living willow and dried willow. For larger structures, suitable structural frameworks can also be incorporated where additional strength and stability are required.
The material and construction method are always considered alongside the intended location, scale and purpose of the piece.
From Traditional Craft to Contemporary Design
Much of my work is created to commission, which means there is no fixed catalogue of designs.
A project might begin with a simple idea, a photograph, a sketch, a landscape plan or a detailed design specification. I can work with clients to develop the concept and advise on materials, scale, construction and installation.
I particularly enjoy collaborative projects where the willow element needs to work alongside a wider garden, landscape, architectural or environmental design.
For larger commissions, I can work with landscape architects, garden designers, architects, contractors, events companies and organisations to develop and deliver the finished piece.
From Studio to Site
Every project is different. Smaller pieces are usually constructed in my studio, while larger structures may be partially or completely woven on site.
On-site construction can be particularly useful for large-scale willow structures where transporting a completed piece would be impractical.
I consider access, transportation, installation, ground conditions and the environment in which the finished piece will be used as part of the design and planning process.
Our Location
Hanmade Willow Studio is based in the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales.
I work on commissions throughout South Wales and across the UK, with larger projects planned around delivery, installation and on-site construction requirements.
Recent work has included bespoke willow sculpture and structures for gardens, public spaces, visitor attractions, environmental projects and events.
