There's something incredibly satisfying about seeing a commission evolve from a simple conversation into six finished sculptures, each one made entirely by hand. My latest project involved creating six bespoke willow obelisks for a local events company, where they'll become part of a beautifully styled private celebration. Although the structures are striking in their own right, their real transformation will happen when they're dressed with foliage, flowers and decorative elements, becoming elegant tree-like installations that help shape the atmosphere of the event.
Projects like this remind me why I love working with willow. Every stem has its own character, every weave is unique, and every commission offers the opportunity to create something that simply can't be bought off the shelf. Whether used in a luxury wedding, corporate event, festival or private garden party, handcrafted willow sculptures bring warmth, sustainability and artistry into a space in a way that manufactured décor rarely can.
A Commission Designed for Celebration
When I was approached to produce these six obelisks, the vision was immediately exciting. Rather than being standalone sculptures, they were intended to become decorative "trees" within a larger event design. The event planner wanted natural structures that could be dressed to suit the styling of the celebration while remaining elegant enough to stand beautifully on their own.
Each obelisk measures approximately 2 metres tall, making them large enough to create impact without overwhelming the space. Their slim profile allows them to be positioned individually or grouped together to frame entrances, line pathways or create stunning photo opportunities. Because they're handcrafted rather than mass-produced, each one carries subtle variations that add authenticity and charm.
Working closely with local event professionals is always rewarding because it allows creativity to flow in both directions. My role is to create the woven foundation, while talented stylists bring their own vision through flowers, lighting and seasonal decorations.
Why Willow Works So Beautifully for Events
Natural materials have become increasingly popular in event design over recent years, and it's easy to understand why. Guests are looking for experiences that feel authentic, memorable and connected to nature. Willow delivers exactly that.
Unlike plastic props or temporary displays, woven willow has texture, movement and warmth. It photographs beautifully in both natural daylight and evening lighting, making it particularly attractive for weddings and luxury celebrations where every detail matters.
Another reason willow has become so desirable is its environmental credentials. As one of the UK's most sustainable craft materials, willow is renewable, biodegradable and has a remarkably low environmental impact compared with many manufactured alternatives. Clients who are planning eco-conscious events increasingly appreciate décor that reflects those values without compromising on elegance.
The versatility of willow also makes it an excellent investment for event companies. These obelisks can be reused across multiple events with completely different themes simply by changing their decoration. One weekend they might become blossom trees for a wedding; the next, illuminated sculptures for a corporate gala or enchanted woodland features for a festive celebration.
Building the Willow Obelisks
Every commission starts with selecting the right materials. The choice of willow has a huge influence on both the appearance and the longevity of the finished sculpture.
Selecting the Right Materials
For these obelisks, I used strong willow sticks for the main uprights. These form the structural skeleton of each sculpture, providing the strength needed to support the finished weave while maintaining a graceful tapered shape.
The spiral weaving was created using 7-foot Black Maul willow, one of my favourite materials for projects like this. Black Maul is incredibly flexible while producing smooth, flowing lines that naturally wrap around the framework. The continuous spiral creates both strength and elegance, locking the uprights together while giving the obelisk its distinctive appearance.
Using traditional weaving techniques, every section is tensioned carefully by hand. Unlike machine-made products, handmade willow naturally develops subtle variations that make every sculpture unique.
Weaving Each Sculpture
Creating six matching obelisks requires far more than simply repeating the same process. Every piece must maintain consistent proportions while responding to the natural differences in each willow rod.
The weaving begins at the base before gradually spiralling upwards, with every wrap strengthening the framework. As the structure narrows towards the top, maintaining even spacing becomes increasingly important. It's a slow, methodical process where patience pays dividends.
Throughout the build, each obelisk is continually checked for symmetry and balance. Small adjustments during weaving ensure the finished sculptures stand perfectly while retaining the organic character that makes handmade work so appealing.
Protecting the Finished Sculptures
Once weaving is complete, each obelisk is treated with linseed oil to help protect the willow from the elements. This natural finish nourishes the timber fibres while enhancing the beautiful tones of the woven willow.
For outdoor installations, this protective treatment helps improve durability and prolong the life of the sculptures. With occasional maintenance, handcrafted willow structures can continue looking beautiful for years, making them an excellent choice for both event companies and private clients.
Designed to Become Decorative Trees
One of my favourite aspects of this commission is knowing that these sculptures are only the beginning.
Once delivered, they'll be transformed into decorative trees using carefully selected foliage and styling. Depending on the event theme, they could feature artificial blossom, seasonal greenery, hanging lanterns, fairy lights, ribbons or floral installations.
These adaptable structures allow event stylists enormous creative freedom. Instead of hiring large artificial trees that are difficult to transport and store, willow provides an elegant framework that can evolve for every occasion.
For guests, these installations become far more than decoration. They help define spaces, create memorable entrances and provide natural focal points where photographs are taken and memories are made.
Bespoke Willow for Weddings, Festivals and Private Events
Although these obelisks were commissioned for a private celebration, the same techniques can be adapted for almost any event.
Handcrafted willow sculptures work beautifully for:
Luxury weddings
Private garden parties
Corporate events
Outdoor festivals
Christmas installations
Hospitality venues
National Trust properties
Botanical gardens
Public art installations
Seasonal displays
Every project starts with a conversation. Some clients arrive with detailed drawings, while others simply have an idea or mood they'd like to create. Part of my role is helping translate those ideas into handcrafted sculptures that complement both the venue and the event itself.
Because every commission is bespoke, dimensions, weaving styles and finishes can all be tailored to suit individual requirements.
Why Choose Bespoke Handmade Willow?
There's something special about knowing your event décor has been crafted specifically for your celebration.
Unlike mass-produced props, handmade willow sculptures become conversation pieces. Guests naturally gravitate towards them because they recognise the craftsmanship involved. The slight variations, the flowing lines and the visible weaving all tell the story of a piece that has been created by hand rather than manufactured in a factory.
For event planners, bespoke commissions also offer exclusivity. Instead of hiring the same decorations used at countless other venues, they can offer clients something completely unique that reflects their individual vision.
Looking Ahead
Completing these six willow obelisks has been another reminder of just how versatile willow can be. From contemporary garden sculptures and architectural features to large-scale public art and event installations, woven willow continues to surprise people with its strength, elegance and adaptability.
I'm looking forward to seeing these sculptures fully decorated and transformed into beautiful tree-like installations for the event. Watching another creative team build on the woven foundations is one of the most rewarding parts of collaborative commissions like this.
If you're an event planner, wedding stylist, venue, festival organiser or private client looking for bespoke handcrafted willow sculptures, I'd love to hear about your ideas. Whether you need elegant obelisks, arches, domes, sculptural seating or completely bespoke installations, every commission is designed and woven by hand to create something truly memorable.
Natural materials never go out of style, and handcrafted willow has a unique ability to bring warmth, artistry and a sense of place to every celebration.
