Sometimes the simplest commissions make the biggest difference.

This project involved creating two bespoke raised willow beds to surround a pair of mature bay trees in the front garden of a home entrance. Before the work began, the trees sat alone on a slight slope, with no defined structure around them. The brief was to soften the space, add interest, and create planting areas that would enhance the entrance to the house.

The Design Approach

Rather than introducing hard landscaping or rigid borders, we chose to work with the natural flow of the garden.

We decided on semi-circular raised beds, wrapping gently around each bay tree. The curved shape complements the rounded form of the trees and creates a softer, more welcoming feel than straight edges would have. This approach also helps the beds sit comfortably on the slope, blending into the landscape rather than cutting across it.

The semi-circles provide generous space for seasonal flowers and planting, allowing the bay trees to remain the focal point while adding colour, texture, and structure around them.

Craftsmanship & Technique

The raised beds were constructed using a traditional fence weaving method, woven entirely by hand from natural willow. This technique creates strong, durable structures while maintaining a light, organic appearance.

Each bed was shaped on site to ensure it fitted perfectly around the trees and responded to the contours of the garden.

The Result

The finished willow raised beds now frame the bay trees beautifully, transforming the front garden into a more considered and inviting entrance. The flowing curves soften the space, while the woven willow adds warmth, texture, and craftsmanship.

Once planted, the beds will continue to evolve with the seasons, making the entrance feel alive and welcoming year-round.
