How a steel framework, hundreds of willow rods and a shared vision came together to create an immersive woodland sculpture.
A Commission Inspired by Nature
Every willow sculpture begins with an idea, but this project began with something even more exciting—a vision to create a natural, immersive feature that would become part of a much bigger story.
I was commissioned to design and build a bespoke willow beaver den for Amelia Trust Farm, where it will form part of the woodland experience ahead of the arrival of captive beavers later this autumn.
The brief was to create something that felt authentic to the surrounding woodland while providing visitors with an engaging feature that reflected the habitat of one of Britain's most remarkable native species.
Rather than simply building a sculpture to look at, the aim was to create something people could walk into, explore and experience.
Projects like this are exactly why I love working with willow. Every commission is unique, every location is different, and every sculpture tells its own story.
The Brief
Creating a realistic beaver den isn't simply about copying nature.
It needed to capture the organic appearance of a real beaver lodge while also being strong enough to withstand years of public use and changing weather conditions.
The structure needed to:
Blend naturally into its woodland surroundings.
Be robust enough for visitors to walk through and enjoy.
Feel authentic without compromising durability.
Be built using sustainable natural materials wherever possible.
Become a memorable feature within the woodland experience.
From the very beginning, I knew this would require careful planning before a single piece of willow was woven.
Designing the Beaver Den
One of the biggest challenges with larger willow sculptures is balancing natural beauty with structural integrity.
After surveying the site and taking detailed measurements, I worked with local fabricators Set Pieces to design a bespoke internal steel framework.
The steel frame provides the hidden strength that allows the willow to create the organic form while ensuring the finished sculpture remains stable and suitable for a public setting.
This collaboration between traditional craftsmanship and modern fabrication makes it possible to create large-scale willow installations that are both beautiful and built to last.
Choosing the Willow
The willow itself plays just as important a role as the design.
For this project, I sourced high-quality willow from Musgrove Willows, selecting rods with different colours, diameters and natural movement.
Rather than using perfectly uniform material, I deliberately chose willow with character.
Different textures and subtle colour variations create depth within the weave and help the finished sculpture feel as though it has naturally grown within the woodland.
Each bundle was transported to site ready for what would become days of weaving.
Weaving the Structure
This is where the sculpture truly starts to come alive.
Although visitors often admire the finished piece, most never see the craftsmanship behind it.
Every willow rod is individually selected and carefully woven into the structure.
Some provide strength.
Others define the shape.
Some simply add movement, texture and character.
There isn't a template to follow.
Every decision is made by eye, constantly responding to the developing form of the sculpture.
Working outdoors also means responding to the landscape itself. The surrounding woodland influenced the flow of the weave, helping the beaver den settle naturally into its environment rather than appearing as something that had simply been placed there.
Finishing the weaving was an incredibly satisfying milestone.
It was a long, hot week, but seeing the finished structure standing amongst the trees made every hour worthwhile.
Protecting the Sculpture
Once the weaving was complete, the willow was treated with linseed oil to help protect it from the elements while allowing the natural beauty of the material to shine through.
The protective finish enhances the rich tones of the willow and helps preserve the sculpture as it begins its life outdoors.
As with all natural materials, the sculpture will continue to evolve over time, gradually weathering and becoming even more at home within its surroundings.
The Beaver Sculpture
No beaver den would be complete without its resident.
Alongside the den, I have also handcrafted a willow beaver sculpture that has been designed to sit proudly on top of the structure.
Although the sculpture is complete, we're keeping it safely off-site for now.
It will be installed closer to the arrival of Amelia Trust Farm's captive beavers later this autumn, allowing the full installation to be revealed at just the right moment.
For now... that's one part of the project I'm keeping under wraps!
Why Commission a Bespoke Willow Sculpture?
One of the things I enjoy most is creating sculptures that are completely unique to their setting.
Whether it's a wildlife-inspired feature, a natural play structure, an entrance statement piece or a public artwork, every commission is individually designed around the space, the people using it and the story it needs to tell.
Willow offers something few other materials can.
It feels warm.
Natural.
Organic.
It encourages people to stop, explore and connect with the landscape around them.
Combined with carefully designed steel frameworks, it's also possible to create larger, longer-lasting installations suitable for public spaces and visitor attractions.
Bespoke Willow Sculptures for Public Spaces, Visitor Attractions and Landscapes
This project demonstrates what's possible when traditional willow weaving is combined with thoughtful design and engineering.
I work with:
Visitor attractions
Wildlife parks and conservation organisations
Landscape architects and garden designers
Local authorities
Schools and outdoor learning environments
Parks and open spaces
Festivals and event organisers
Hotels, estates and hospitality venues
From concept sketches through to fabrication, installation and finishing, every sculpture is handcrafted to create something distinctive and memorable.
Whether you're looking for a large-scale willow sculpture, an immersive natural play feature, a wildlife-inspired installation or a bespoke artistic centrepiece, I'd love to help bring your ideas to life.
Looking for a Bespoke Willow Sculpture?
If you're planning a project and would like to create a unique willow sculpture or natural installation, I'd love to hear from you.
Every commission begins with a conversation about your ideas, your site and the experience you want to create.
Together we can design a handcrafted willow sculpture that becomes a lasting feature of your landscape and something visitors will remember for years to come.
