Commissioning a bespoke willow sculpture doesn't have to start with a finished design.
You might have a simple idea, a photograph, a landscape plan, a sketch or simply know that you want a natural sculptural feature for a particular space.
I can work with you to develop the idea into a practical willow commission.
Step 1 — Start With Your Idea
The first step is simply to get in touch.
Tell me:
What you would like to create
Where it will be installed
Approximate size
What you want it to achieve
Any photographs or inspiration you have
If you're a landscape architect or garden designer, you can also send plans, drawings or a design specification.
Step 2 — Develop the Design
Once I understand the project, we can discuss the design.
This might include:
Shape
Scale
Materials
Weave
Structure
Colour
Location
Installation
For larger commissions, we may also need to consider wind exposure, ground conditions and access.
Step 3 — Choose the Willow
The appropriate material depends on the project.
We can consider:
Living willow for structures that will continue to grow.
Dried willow for fixed sculptures and structures.
Thicker willow sticks for establishing larger forms.
Fine weaving willow for surface detail and woven texture.
Step 4 — Quotation
Once the scope of the project is clear, I can prepare a quotation.
This can include:
Materials
Design and construction
Delivery
Installation
On-site construction where required
For larger projects, the quotation can be developed alongside the design and specification.
Step 5 — Construction
Once the commission is agreed, construction begins.
Smaller pieces are generally made in the studio.
Larger structures may be constructed partially or completely on site.
Step 6 — Installation
Depending on the project, the finished piece can be delivered and installed, or the structure can be woven directly at its final location.
The most appropriate approach will be considered during the planning stage.
Collaboration Is Part of the Process
I particularly enjoy working collaboratively with clients and design professionals.
You don't have to know exactly which willow, weave or construction method you need.
My role is to bring the specialist willow knowledge to the project and help develop an approach that works visually and practically.
Ready to Discuss Your Idea?
If you have an idea for a willow sculpture or structure, get in touch.
You can send photographs, sketches, plans, dimensions or simply describe what you have in mind.
