Restoring a Living Willow Tunnel

This project involved the repair and partial rebuild of a large willow tunnel within the grounds of Oakfield Primary School. Over time, the tunnel had become heavily overgrown, with sections losing their structure and requiring careful rebuilding to make the space safe, usable and inspiring once again.

Understanding the Brief

From the outset, the school wanted more than just a tidy-up. The brief was to restore the tunnel as a usable outdoor learning and play space, while enhancing its design to support exploration, imagination and flow better.

It was essential that the finished structure felt magical, welcoming, and robust, something that could withstand enthusiastic daily use by pupils in all weather conditions.

Repair, Rebuild and Redesign

The work involved a combination of careful pruning, re-training existing growth and rebuilding sections of the tunnel where the original structure had failed. As part of the redesign, new features were introduced, including clearly defined entrances and exits, along with small woven “windows” that allow light in and create playful moments of interaction for children moving through the space.

Learning Through Making

A particularly special part of this project was the involvement of the school’s Eco and Outdoor Learning Committee. Pupils worked alongside me during parts of the build, learning about willow, sustainability and traditional weaving techniques.

Their enthusiasm was incredible, even during heavy rain, the children remained fully engaged, proud to be part of creating something lasting for their school environment.

Headteacher Feedback

"Hanmade Willow Studio has been absolutely fantastic. Hannah came in to tackle a group of out-of-control willow trees and completely transformed the space. She really listened to our brief and understood exactly what we wanted as a school. The result is a stunning willow tunnel, complete with entrances, exits and little “windows” that our children are already obsessed with.

Hannah is clearly an expert in her craft, but what really stood out was the way she worked with our Eco and Outdoor Learning Committee…

We would highly recommend Hanmade Willow Studio and will definitely be inviting Hannah back in the future."

Creating Spaces That Grow With Communities

Living willow structures evolve over time, making them ideal for schools and community spaces. This project highlights how repair and restoration can breathe new life into existing features, extending their lifespan while deepening their educational and environmental value.
