The Art of the Guernsey Basket: Reviving a Traditional Willow Design

There’s something special about weaving a piece with deep roots in tradition. Recently, I had the pleasure of completing a commission for a set of Guernsey baskets — a design steeped in history, functionality, and craftsmanship.

The Guernsey basket, or panier à main, is a traditional design once used widely on the Channel Islands. Known for its strong frame and curved shape, it was often carried by farmers and fishermen to transport produce, tools, and even shellfish. Every curve and weave was designed with purpose, combining practicality with timeless beauty.

Bringing the Tradition Back to Life

My client wanted baskets that honoured this heritage but also reflected a contemporary handmade touch. Each piece was woven by hand with sustainably sourced willow, using time-honoured techniques that give the basket strength and character.
