Willow can introduce natural texture, structure and sculpture into a landscape without feeling disconnected from its surroundings.

For landscape architects and garden designers, bespoke willow can be used as a sculptural focal point, gateway, shelter, play structure, screen, wildlife feature or immersive installation.

Because each piece is made specifically for the project, its scale, form, material and weave can be developed alongside the wider landscape design.

Willow as Part of a Wider Landscape

A willow sculpture doesn't have to be an isolated object.

It can be designed to:

  • Frame a view

  • Mark an entrance

  • Lead people through a space

  • Create a destination

  • Provide shelter

  • Encourage exploration

  • Complement planting

  • Reflect a site's identity

  • Tell a story

The natural colour and texture of willow can also sit comfortably alongside planting, timber, stone and other natural materials.

Willow Sculpture

Bespoke animal and wildlife sculpture can be particularly effective where a project has an environmental, educational or place-specific theme.

Other commissions might involve:

  • Abstract sculpture

  • Natural forms

  • Botanical forms

  • Large-scale sculpture

  • Sculptural entrances

  • Decorative garden features

The scale can be developed around the surrounding landscape and how the sculpture will be experienced by visitors.

Willow Structures

Willow can also be used to create physical structures such as:

  • Arches

  • Moon gates

  • Domes

  • Dens

  • Tunnels

  • Shelters

  • Screens

  • Fencing

  • Natural play structures

These can become functional elements within a landscape as well as visual features.

Living or Dried Willow?

The choice of material is particularly important when specifying willow within a landscape scheme.

Living willow can become part of the planting design and will continue to grow and change.

Dried willow creates a fixed sculptural form that remains visually consistent.

The choice depends on the intended outcome, site conditions, maintenance requirements and the role of the willow within the overall landscape.

Working From Landscape Plans

I can work from:

  • Landscape plans

  • Architectural drawings

  • Concept designs

  • Site photographs

  • Dimensions

  • Design specifications

  • Reference imagery

If the willow element hasn't been fully designed yet, I'm also happy to collaborate during the concept development stage.

Materials & Construction

Different scales and designs require different construction approaches.

Smaller structures may be created using willow sticks and weaving willow.

Larger structures may use thicker willow and, where appropriate, a suitable structural framework.

For some larger projects, weaving can be completed on site.

This can be particularly useful where the completed structure would be difficult to transport.

Installation

Installation requirements should be considered from the beginning of a landscape project.

Access, delivery, ground conditions and the final position of the structure can all influence the design and construction method.

I can work with the wider project team to plan the willow element through to completion.

A Collaborative Approach

Every landscape project has different requirements.

My role is to provide specialist willow knowledge while working alongside the wider design team.

I can advise on materials, weaving, construction, scale and installation, helping to develop a willow element that works as part of the overall landscape rather than as an afterthought.
